It takes a village.
Often times throughout the week, we receive inquiries of the availability of our space for rentals for rehearsals and performances. Suchu Dance offers steeply discounted partner rates to individuals and organizations that are invited to participate in collaboration with Suchu Dance's annual programming.
We understand the need for using our space outside of Suchu Dance's planned programming--in a city where it's often hard for individuals or other professionals to find a reliable location to work on a private rehearsal. Which is why Suchu Dance offers a Work Exchange program.
What is the Work Exchange?
Suchu Dance was built, in part, by the community. Over the course of 6 months, numerous volunteers helped paint, clean, build a marley floor. In return for their generous spirit, we offered free or discounted classes and reduced rehearsal rates.
Some things haven’t changed: we’re still operating on community power. In exchange for free or discounted classes and reduced rehearsal rates, work-exchangers help us with everything from manning the front desk and cleaning up to website maintenance and computer repair. We love to barter, and it helps keep our performance rates, production and movement classes affordable for everyone. You shouldn't have to pay an arm and a leg for art in Houston!
In a wonderfully unexpected twist, it also fosters a sense of community. We’ve had many people share stories of the friendships they’ve developed through volunteering with Suchu Dance. And we are endlessly grateful: a big thank you to all our work exchangers, past, present, and future!
